Swisscom acquires majority stake in Innovative Web Group

Swisscom took a majority stake in the Zurich company Innovative Web Group. Financial details were not disclosed, but the Swiss incumbent said the acquisition “will expand its skills” in web and e-government solutions for public administrations and community organizations.

In particular, Swisscom argued, the group’s web expertise will help strengthen “Localcités”, an online platform managed by the wholly-owned Swisscom Directories subsidiary. Localcities is aimed at Swiss communities and associations.

“Swisscom Directories already offers standardized web solutions for communities and associations under the Localcities brand,” said Stefano Santinelli, CEO of Swisscom Directories.

“In association with Innovative Web, we will use technical modules in a mutually beneficial way and develop new innovative solutions to meet almost all the needs of the approximately 2,200 Swiss municipalities, regardless of their size.”

According to Swisscom Directories, the Localcities ?? launched in 2018 ?? provides citizens with “hyperlocal information” which, in turn, is supposed to “facilitate everyday life and encourage residents to get involved in their community and in associations”.

The information and advice available on the platform generally revolves around official, economic, social and cultural life linked to each municipality.

Do not touch

Swisscom does not intend to shake things up at Innovative Web, which has around 50 employees. The group must remain legally independent and the takeover, Swisscom noted, “will not result in any changes for customers and employees.”

Steff Desan-Schnetzler, CEO of Innovative Web since 2000, when the company was founded, remains in charge. Santinelli is however the new chairman of the board.

Desan-Schnetzler welcomed the terms of the takeover and was pleased that Innovative Web’s eGovernment products “are now reaching even wider distribution throughout Switzerland”.

The self-proclaimed goal of Innovative Web is to enable governments to create what it calls “high quality websites and web services” at low cost.
