SEO software startup Moz acquired by iContact Marketing Corp., 17 years after launch in Seattle
SEO software startup Moz was acquired by email marketing firm iContact, a subsidiary of J2 Global. Terms of the contract are not disclosed.
Rand Fishkin and his mother Gillian Muessig started Seattle-based Moz in 2004. The company, initially known as SEOMoz, has grown into one of Seattle’s top startups, although its journey hasn’t always been smooth. . Moz, which has built a reputation for corporate transparency, cut 28% of its workforce in 2016 and went through financial hardship in 2013.
Moz was ranked # 10 on GeekWire 200, our list of the best private tech companies in the Pacific Northwest. The startup is profitable and growing. He declined to provide income figures.
Companies like Alaska Airlines and Zillow Group use Moz to refine their SEO and rank higher in search engine results. Search and SEO continues to be a growing industry, even more than two decades after companies like Google and Yahoo took to the desktop. The proliferation of mobile devices and other additional places where users search online, including in mobile apps and shopping sites such as Amazon, has created a constant demand for SEO services.
The Moz brand will remain intact under its new owner. iContact helped deliver 68 billion emails last year for small and medium businesses. The company works in tandem with its sister brands Campaigner, SMTP and Kickbox, all owned by J2 Global, a publicly traded company that reported first quarter revenue of $ 398 million, up 20% from year after year.
Moz will join J2’s email marketing brands and combine resources to help shared customer base with research strategies and analytics.

Moz employs 177 people. The company acquired six other startups and raised $ 29.1 million in outside capital.

Fishkin left Moz in 2018 and stepped down from the board in September 2020. He now heads Seattle-based marketing startup SparkToro.
