GW Grizzlies survive South Delta in football playoff thriller
The GW Graham Grizzlies are moving and South Delta is over, but coming out of the playoffs the Sun Devils have helped deliver a game for the ages.
The senior college football teams faced off Friday night at Chilliwack’s Exhibition Stadium, with GW Graham taking a 48-47 victory. The score alone tells you it was a thriller, but the ending to it was next level.
Trailing by two points with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies ran the length of the field to score, veering off a two-point convert to lead 41-35. But South Delta refused to die. They took 20 seconds to respond with their own touchdown and were one point after kick away from winning the game.
Providing the ultimate proof that special teams win games, Aiden Parks pulled off the “immaculate deflection,” blocking the point kick after and sending the game into overtime.
GW Graham scored on his first possession and kicked the convert for a 48-41 lead. Again, the Sun Devils came back with a TD, but when they went for a two-point convert and the win, Josh Seo offered an interception to finally seal the deal.
Leading the Grizzlies offense were running backs Maleky Colgiu and Yapo Conteh. Colgiu carried the ball 25 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Conteh carried the ball 12 times for 94 yards and three majors.
Seo and Riley Ashley led GW Graham’s defense with seven tackles apiece.
The Grizzlies will advance to a provincial AAA semi-final on Saturday November 26 and face the St. Thomas More Knights at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
