Google on SEO for small businesses and its evolution


Google’s John Mueller suggests that the way small businesses SEO is changing in ways that industry experts aren’t following.

Much of the content on the Web aimed at helping small businesses is based on an “old-fashioned” way of doing things, says Mueller.

He goes on to explain how experts can change their message and tailor it to how small businesses are most likely to approach SEO.

This topic is discussed during the Google Search Central SEO Office Hours Hangout on October 8, 2021.

In response to the question, Mueller says there are plenty of helpful SEO starter guides posted around the web by industry experts.

Advice tends to be precise, Mueller says, because there isn’t a lot of misinformation out there about SEO basics.

However, beginner’s guides are out of touch with how businesses build and optimize websites.

It can be confusing for a newbie who uses a simple site builder and the getting started guides talk about optimizing HTML pages.

Mueller explains:

“The tricky part with all of these getting started guides, at least the ones I’ve seen, is that they’re often based on an almost old-fashioned website template where you create HTML pages.

For the most part, small businesses, when they go online, no longer create HTML pages, they log into WordPress, Wix, or one of the other common hosting platforms, and they create their own. pages by inserting text and dragging them. pictures in, and all of that stuff.

And they don’t really realize that on the back there is actually an HTML page.

Getting started guides are more technical than they should be, continues Mueller.

While many beginner’s guides talk about writing HTML code to adjust title elements, small business SEO is all about filling out fields.

“So sometimes when you go through these getting started guides it can feel very technical and not really match what you are actually doing when you are building these web pages.

Because when we talk about title elements, for example, you don’t look at the HTML code anymore and try to edit it. But instead you try to find the ground in whatever hosting system you have and think about what you need to put there.

So this is something where I think over time things are probably going to change a bit to cover that area a bit better. “

If you’re writing content for people who are beginner-level SEOs, the key here is to make it less technical.

Teach newbies to customize the look of their site in search results by manipulating fields in a CMS, rather than writing code.

For small businesses and newbies, Mueller asks you to keep in mind that SEO is less daunting than it looks.

“But it’s something to keep in mind that SEO starter guides, when you look at them they might look super technical, but in reality the work you do is a lot more like filling in fields and making sure. that the links are there, and things like that.
